Artist: Asake Denise Jones

The 6th March 1957 was a globally historic day. Ghana became the first Sub-Saharan African country to regain sovereignty after being under British colonial rule - Independence Day. My first orientation to the culture and food of Ghana was from a Ghanaian family who were friends with my family. In 1978 I had the opportunity to travel to Ghana as a student volunteer with Operation Crossroads Africa. This piece is embellished with artifacts that I purchased and/or were gifted to me on my 1978 & 2012 trips to Ghana.
