Seminole Patchwork in black, grey and white printed cottons and polycottons. The patterns in the prints override the patterns made by the patchwork. The plain black and white strips are all silk. The patchwork is divided into irregular blocks. The design for these blocks comes from the letter shapes of the name GUERNICA. I feel as if I had always known about the bombing of Guernica. Picasso's painting probably had a lot to do with that. But until I googled 1937 I did not realise that I was twelve days old when the bombing happened. The Challenge for me was to take a patchwork technique known for its routine of regular patterns and to use it to portray CHAOS.
