Stretching Art and Tradition

Continuing my interest in books, reading and writing in historical times, I challenged myself to create a letter inspired by the diaper patterning of the illuminated letters in manuscripts. Further challenges were to use a soldering iron to etch letters into silk in a similar look as the regular lettering in such manuscripts and to create “pen flourishes” using 2 metallic threads together for the stitching. As I did for my D quilt, I tried using brocade as backing, I like the look of the way the stitches sink into the brocade. Using blue felt behind the silk gave it a cooler hue.
